I have a feeling that this book will end up as kindling for some desperate soul long after I die, but for the small chance that you’ve decided to read the first few pages of my Almanac before burning it to ashes. . . Thank you. You won’t regret keeping this book, because it may save your life if you’re new to the Apocalypse. Over the past years I’ve gathered evidence on the monsters around this city. What they can do, where to find them, possible weaknesses, etc.
Normal zombie’s- slow, dumb, and will follow anything that makes noise.
These zombies can be found almost anywhere.
Though they may be stupid, they have incredible sense of smell and hearing. From what I could gather they can smell a drop of fresh blood from about 3 miles away, and can hear a whisper from 2 miles away, but luckily since they usually travel in large numbers usually all they can hear is the bone crunching and moaning of each other.
How to avoid them (Temporary)
If you’re a loner just like me then the best way to avoid these zombies when they’re in large groups is to wear the skin of one of them. Yes it sounds gross but it works, I’ve been able to walk through huge crowds of zombies without a single one trying to eat me. To wear the skin you have to clean out the inside of it so you don’t accidentally swallow some of their blood and become one of them. Keep the skin dry, and after about a month the skin will lose its scent and become useless. Remember, even though you may look like a zombie, you have to act the part, walk slow and be cautious, try to avoid touching other zombies or you may aggravate them and the zombies will kill you.
The nervous system is the only weakness. This includes the brain and spine (nerve gas is a great way to kill large groups of zombies)
Runners- slow, but fast when hunting, very violent
These are the 2nd most common type of zombie, you can find 1 runner in every 10 normal zombies.
They’re just like Normal ones but they’re faster, and for some reason instead of eating their prey as soon as they grab it, they rip it apart and beat it into a bloody mess and then they’ll eat what’s left.
I used to not be able to tell the difference between a normal zombie and a runner, but I looked closer, and realized that these zombies usually have bloody beaten arms (normal zombies just look like a pale rotting version of a person) their legs aren’t as rotten and are fresh compared to the rest of the body making it look like someone cut their legs off and attached fresh feet to them, and these zombies have brown spots along their arms and legs, but these are usually covered by clothing.
How to avoid them
Runners have been known to rip apart and eat a normal zombie without warning.
The chances of the zombie skin technique fooling a runner is a 50/50 chance (I had to learn this the hard way and barely lived). I think this does fool them but they try to rip you apart anyway because of their violent instincts. I used to think they do this because they’re hungry and they weren’t as picky as other zombies, but I’ve seen multiple runners kill other zombies and not eat them, so my guess is that there’s a chemical imbalance in what’s left of the runners brains, making them randomly angry to the point of killing something.
But on the 50% chance a runner will attack you remember that they only do this if they see something move, so if possible stay out of line of sight with them, but if you have to move into sight of a runner, have a knife ready.
Crawlers- thin, quiet, prefer the dark, can fit in tight spots, more active at night
You will only find these types of zombies in buildings or tunnels,
They look like a walking skeleton, the bones of their fingertips have mutated to look like long sharp daggers on the end of each finger/toe and they walk on all 4, can crawl on walls and ceiling and fit through tight spaces
Since they live in the dark they don’t rely on sight, and usually depend on hearing more than smell
How to avoid them
Stay inside at night with all doors and windows locked, stay quiet and keep a knife and flashlight handy. Avoid using a gun if possible, if fired crawlers will hear the gunshot and swarm you. A flashlight will make them writhe in pain and get away from you, but other crawlers will hear their screeching comrade and you’ll be swarmed by them (only use a flashlight against a single crawler that’s charging you). Since crawlers need to live in the dark, they can only come up at night, and if they leave the city they won’t be able to go anywhere to hide from the sun, so if possible avoid cities at night. Another way to avoid them is to use a speaker. It sounds stupid but if you set a timer on a speaker turn up the speaker at max volume, and run away, the crawlers will be on it soon because they can feel the vibration of the music/timer playing and they think it’s something they can eat since they rely on sound/vibrations more than smell, so a speaker would be a great diversion if you have to get past crawlers.
